Original handles and escutcheons.

This charming little chest, ONLY 81CM TALL, is constructed of thick cuts of cedar and contains two short drawers and two long drawers. Drawers have pine base.

Well loved, aged 19th century patina-burnt dark honey colour.

Square tapered front legs. C19th patina.

Newly upholstered in luxurious black studded leather.

Originally from the Hunter Valley estate of Dr F. Sulling.

WW1 veteran and doctor who set up practice in High St Maitland after the war.

Passed down by descent.

Suitable for a multitude of purposes including a desk chair, bedroom chair, hall chair.

Very comfortable seating and firm back support.

COLONIAL CEDAR SIDEBOARD

 from the workshop of 

JOSEPH SLY. C1835-40

Classically inspired backboard featuring paneled sections with superbly figured grain.

Each shelf is supported by individually shaped supports which appear to resemble (in the mind’s eye) a Kangaroo with joey on the lower shelf and Dolphins on the upper shelf.

Stunning cuts of Cedar are highlighted. The chatoyance displayed in this piece is amazing and beautiful.

The cupboard base consists of two doors with double escutcheons which enclose one interior shelf.

This piece would most likely have come from the earliest workshop of Joseph Sly in Pitt St Sydney.

Sly was a prominent, skilled craftsman and his work was highly regarded.

It is highly collectable, particularly with two impressed Sly marks -one on the top and one on the bottom of this piece.

It shows wonderful C19th patina having been cleaned and waxed.

This beautiful, early piece of Australiana comes from the estate of Dr F. Sulling,

a World War 1 doctor, who on return from service, set up practice in High St. Maitland, Passed down by descent.

AUSTRALIAN COLONIAL CEDAR SIDEBOARD
C 1870

Beautifully carved adornments, striking grain to the Cedar, an elegant piece.

This nineteenth century sideboard is of full Cedar construction and is in excellent condition.
Applied carving to the back, with a single shelf on turned supports. Shaped centre drawer, flanked by well carved corbels.
Below are two shield panels on the lower doors which exhibit vibrantly grained Cedar.
Key to lock away treasures.
Original turned feet.

COLONIAL CEDAR BOOKCASE C1860.

The top glazed section features a pelmet,carved corbels top and bottom.

It has three original shelves with original green leather braiding to the front edge of each shelf.

The bottom section of the bookcase features two fully rounded and turned columns either side of two arched panelled doors highlighting beautifully grained Cedar.

There are two rounded upper drawers in the bottom section and one internal shelf.

Original , pleasant faded finish.

Vibrant Huon Pine arched door panels.

Alternating, vertical lengths of Cedar and Huon Pine make the side panels something special.

The doors open to reveal amazing lower interior drawer faced with diagonal sections of Musk, Casuarina, Myrtle and Blackwood.

Excellent original condition.

Back is shaped and carved in a classical manner with one shelf on small bobbin turned supports.

The bottom section has applied shield panel doors with acorn finial adornments.

The doors are flanked by half twist bobbin turned columns

19TH CENTURY PATINA.

Probably South Australian origin.

Exhibits alternate cross banding of Huon Pine and Cedar.

Flat pilasters of Huon Pine either side of lower doors.

Applied shields of Birds Eye Huon Pine to lower doors.

Pencil signature inside top of pelmet.

This signature appears to say -

"J . W. Penney " in flourishing manuscript.

Probably a " one off "
