COLONIAL CEDAR SIDEBOARD
from the workshop of
JOSEPH SLY. C1835-40
Classically inspired backboard featuring paneled sections with superbly figured grain.
Each shelf is supported by individually shaped supports which appear to resemble (in the mind’s eye) a Kangaroo with joey on the lower shelf and Dolphins on the upper shelf.
Stunning cuts of Cedar are highlighted. The chatoyance displayed in this piece is amazing and beautiful.
The cupboard base consists of two doors with double escutcheons which enclose one interior shelf.
This piece would most likely have come from the earliest workshop of Joseph Sly in Pitt St Sydney.
Sly was a prominent, skilled craftsman and his work was highly regarded.
It is highly collectable, particularly with two impressed Sly marks -one on the top and one on the bottom of this piece.
It shows wonderful C19th patina having been cleaned and waxed.
This beautiful, early piece of Australiana comes from the estate of Dr F. Sulling,
a World War 1 doctor, who on return from service, set up practice in High St. Maitland, Passed down by descent.
